2014 Workshop and Lecture Program Series Brings History & Nature to Life

Lecture: The Measure of Manhattan: The Legacy of John Randel, Jr., Cartographer, Surveyor, Inventor

Thursday, April 10, at 6:30 pm                                   Presenter: Marguerite Holloway
Mount Harmon Plantation will kick off its 2014 Workshop & Lecture Series on Thursday, April 10 at 6:30 pm. Our first speaker will be Marguerite Holloway, author of the widely acclaimed biography of John Randel, Jr., the man who made the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal possible, as well as creating New York City's grid design. Her book is called, "The Measure of Manhattan: the Tumultous Career and Surprising Legacy of John Randel, Jr., Cartographer, Surveyor, Inventor."  John Randel, Jr. was a fascinating man of the Enlightenment who had a significant impact, not only on New York City, but also on our corner of the world.

Workshop: Colonial Gardens & Gardening

Sunday, May 4, 1pm – 3pm                                            Presenter: Gerry Scarfe
Gardener enthusiasts will enjoy learning about Mount Harmon’s colonial herb garden and how you can grow some of these colonial gems at home. Participants please note, this is a hands on workshop, so please be dressed to garden and get dirty, you will be helping to plant some new herbs for the garden!

Lecture: A Love Like No Other: Abigail & John Adams, A Modern Love Story

Thursday, May 29, at 6:30pm                                     Presenter: Nancy Robson
On Thursday, May 29, the distinguished speaker at Mount Harmon's lecture series will be Nancy Taylor Robson. She will be speaking about her recent historical novel, "A Love Like No Other: Abigail and John Adams, A Modern Love Story." A native of Baltimore, Nancy has lived in Galena for 38 years. She has written dozens of articles and several books on a wide range of subjects, including gardening and the Chesapeake Bay. Her loyal readers have found her writings in The Baltimore Sun, The Washington Post, The Christian Science Monitor, House Beautiful, Yachting Magazine, and other publications.

Program: Guided Lotus Kayak Paddle

Wednesday, July 23, from 9am – 11:30pm                             Presenter: Sultana Projects
Join us for a great kayaking excursion to see the rare American Lotus Water Lilly with a naturalist from the Sultana Projects’ Kayak Mobile Classroom.  Kayaks are supplied.  Open to adults and children 12 and up. Space very limited (to first 10).

Program: Star Gazing & Constellations

Friday, August 15, from 6pm – 10pm                                     Presenter: Delmarva Stargazers Club
Join us for an evening of star gazing as Don Surles of the Delmarva Stargazing Club guides participants to explore the night sky.  Mount Harmon’s pristine setting is perfect for viewing the night sky, constellations, and maybe even a shooting star or two.  Telescopes provided.  Bring your own picnic, enjoy the sunset, and watch the stars come out.

Lecture: The Building of the Schooner Sultana

Thursday, October 2, at 6:30pm.                                            Presenter: John Swain
John Swain is a master shipbuilder who built the Sultana along with lots of volunteers.  John Swain will present a slide show on the making of the Sultana, an authentic 18th c. replica of an English schooner.  The Sultana is used for educational programs and public sails around the Chesapeake Bay.

Lecture: The Landing at Head of Elk: Admiral Howe’s 1777 Assault on the Chesapeake

Thursday, October 23, at 6:30 pm                                          Presenter: Steve Isaacson
Join us to kick off our Revolutionary War Reenctment Festival with a lecture on the largest amphibious landing of the war which was right across from the mouth of the Sassafras River in the nearby Elk River.
